Monthly medal sees ace performances
Golfers at Widnes GC were stunned during the June monthly medal to find two of their fellow members had recorded holes-in-one during the same competition.
Jim Stonehouse, 75, scored his ace on the 178-yard, par-three 18th, while 20-handicapper Brian Pye, 69, made his on the 134-yard 15th. Both were rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and each received a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.
Stonehouse, who plays off 13, has been a member of the club for 41 years, is a past captain and is well respected for his work as a junior coach. His ace came late in the afternoon and the patio by the 18th was crowded with members who celebrated with cheering and a number of toasts.
Stonehouse said: “The great thing about it for me was that it took me more than 45 years to achieve this, but at last it’s happened!”
Pye, who has been a member at Widnes for 13 years, said of his achievement: “The 15th is a tricky hole where it is blind off the tee – there was a gusting wind and the pin was front left over a set of three bunkers. I hit a low seven-iron that just carried to the front of the green and shot out of sight.
“The greens were very fast all day, so I expected to have to chip back on from out the back, until my playing partner checked the hole. We know of no other dual hole-in-one events at our club – or indeed at any of our local clubs.”
