HOLE-IN-ONE DOUBLE LEAVES SHEILA FEELING ‘ACE’
Ash golfer Sheila Farrell aces the same hole twice in just five days

The elusive hole-in-one might be every golfer’s driving ambition but to ace the same green twice in five days is mind-blowing – as one celebrating Surrey lady can testify after defying some astronomical odds.
Sheila Farrell, 66, from Ash, cleaned out Chobham Golf Club’s hole-in-one kitty with her dramatic double on the 143-yard, par-three second hole – with both aces produced by the driver she had considered dumping just a few days earlier.
Farrell, who plays off 17, said: “It’s unbelievable. It was the first hole-in-one I’ve had and I’ve been playing golf for 36 years … and then two come along at once.
“It’s something like 67 million-to-one to get two aces in one round, but to get two in five days on the same hole – you’ve more chance of winning the lottery than doing that.
Sheila’s first taste of glory came in the Chobham ladies midweek June Stableford.
She said: “Conditions were lovely and I used my driver, which I’d been thinking of changing just the week before. I went straight for the pin: the ball skirted a bunker, took one bounce and went in.
“My two playing partners celebrated very noisily … so much so that a couple of ladies from an adjacent hole came rushing round the corner to see what had happened.
“The hardest thing that day was to try to hang on and capitalise on the fact I’d scored eight points on the first two holes – you don’t want to have a hole-in-one and then have a rubbish round.”
But Farrell needn’t have worried as she went on to win the Stableford with 37 points.
Four days later she was celebrating on the ‘second’ again during a monthly mixed competition, although this time she didn’t see her ball drop.
She said: “It was quite a wet day and I took out my driver again – the pin was slightly further back this time. I took the same line as I had done before and the ball was running nicely so I was hoping for three Stableford points.
“I bent down to pick up my tee and, when I stood up, one of my playing partners said they couldn’t see my ball and thought it might be in the hole.
“We walked up to the green; still couldn’t see my ball, so I just checked the hole … and there it was! It was just amazing.”
Sheila joined Chobham four years ago because of the club’s dynamic ladies section. And the dramatic double not only put her in the club’s record books, but also earned her membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.
She laughed: “I couldn’t believe it: seeing the first one go in was a delight, but the second one was just shellshock really, followed by me thinking, ‘I haven’t got my credit card on me’.”
