European Tour’s First 59 – but no hole in one
I think we have to feel a little sorry for history-maker Oliver Fisher.
He goes and shoots the European Tour’s first ever round of 59 and then Tiger Woods goes and wins an event for the first time in a squillion years to make sport news headlines across the galaxy.
But we must revisit and congratulate Fisher on a near-perfect round of golf.
The 30-year-old Londoner’s round at the Portugal Masters is a thing of beauty to see in numbers.
Not a five on the card….10 birdies and an eagle.
He went: 3,3,3,4,3,2,4,2,4,3,3,4,3,4,3,3,4,4
And he almost went one better with his birdie attempt shaving the hole at the 18th.
The European Tour, in existence since 1972, had witnessed 19 scores of 60. 59 - and even 58 - had been delivered on the PGA Tour but never on the opposite side of the Atlantic before Fisher’s heroics.
So, congratulations Oliver Fischer but sorry I don’t see a 1 on the card.
