A pleasant surprise for milestone-maker Mathew
Just more than a month after presenting its 100th winner with a BOSS watch, the new BOSS Watches H1 Club has seen its 500th hole-in-one – scored by a golfer from Chester.
Mathew Howard, 28, who works in the financial sector, scored his ace on the 154-yard, par-three third at Chester Golf Club, and the six-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and his specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.
Remarkably it comes just weeks after Hampshire golfer Alan Clark, 71, took the embryonic club into three figures – now golfers across the British Isles are closing in on the next milestone of 1,000 holes-in-one.
It was Howard’s third hole-in-one but his first at Chester, where he’s been a member for three years. He said: “I had only read about the BOSS Watches H1 Club that morning and was telling my playing partners about it on the first tee. I started bogey, double bogey so was not too chuffed. On the third tee it was the perfect distance for an eight iron, 154 yards, with a breeze slightly off the right.
“When the ball was in the air my playing partner said ‘that’s in’. The bottom of the flag was hidden by a bunker but a group on the 15th tee all walked out with their arms in the air so I knew it was in. It was a great feeling but didn’t help my scorecard which continued in the form of the first two holes.
“Initially I thought I was going to go into a draw for the watch, but then, after the round, somebody told me everybody who scored a hole-in-one would receive one. I was made up!”
